3. Need of Legal Research
Research Methodology is the key point of a research which makes it legitimate, and as stated above, Legal Research is a skillset to provide persuasiveness and validity to an argument. But where exactly will you need this skillset?
As a law student, you might be asked to make research projects or you may have credits for publishing research papers, the topics might be the allotted or you may have to choose one of your interest, the method of research might be provided or you might have to choose one according to the kind of research question. This requires a skill set of Legal Research, through which you conduct the research, curate a research paper and get good grades.
But do you really want it just for grades?
I feel, I wouldn’t have learnt it just for grades. Legal Research and Research Methodology is something which stays with us not just as students attempting to draft research papers but also throughout our professional lives. You may become a litigation lawyer, where you will need to back your arguments with legitimate research in order to persuade the judge (read the example of abortion law again), or as an intern at a law firm or with an advocate, you might be asked about a law which you will have to answer in a very short period of time. For the associate or advocate to move ahead with your answer, it must be reliable and authentic.
Therefore, from your law school journey, internship diaries to your professional career as a litigator, research fellow, academician, librarian, policy maker, member of the legislature, a legal advisor or anything of a similar nature, Legal Research will stay by your side and help you make your unique identity in that field, due to your legitimate and authoritative statements.
Anything you become in your professional life, this skill of Legal Research will follow you, to make you grow exponentially, until you reach the epitome of success. This is the value of the foundational elements of Legal Research, which entail Sources of Information, Research Methods and in turn Research Methodology which you need to find expertise in, to become a better legal researcher.
